A First Run for Mayor

In 2017, Kyle Houston entered a five-way race for mayor of his hometown. He was 27, the owner of a local Allstate insurance agency, and a first-time candidate running against a long-tenured field. His central argument was direct: the same leadership had guided Statesville for the better part of two decades while the city fell behind its neighbors on jobs, household income, and growth.

He ran on specifics. He called for modern economic growth and infrastructure, a community-wide effort to reverse rising crime, a transparent and accountable city government, and real enforcement against absentee owners who let commercial property fall into disrepair.

The campaign earned respect across the field. When candidate Karen Keaton withdrew that August, she told the Record and Landmark she would vote for Houston and urged others to do the same.

In the October 10 primary, Houston finished fourth in a five-way field with 367 votes, a credible first showing for a 27-year-old making his first run for office. With no candidate above the threshold to win outright, the top two finishers advanced to a runoff.

Houston did not go quiet after the primary. In an open letter to voters, he thanked the hundreds who had supported him, explained that he had sat down with both runoff candidates to put the community's questions to them directly, and offered his endorsement, grounding it in his own belief in term limits. It was a gracious close to a hard-fought first campaign.
